transportation healthcare education environment affordable

Farmville is an important market and service town for the region. Most things most people need are here. There are four state parks for outdoor recreation within 30 minutes. We can as easily go to Lynchburg or Chesterfield (each about an hour) for more opportunities and services, or to Charlottesville for highest level medical care. Charlottesville also is a cultural highlight as is Richmond city. Durham and Raleigh NC are other diverse cultural opportunities. We can go to Lynchburg to get Amtrak N or S or to that airport for stateside travel. RIC or RDU are hubs for international travel or for better options stateside.

There is not great cultural diversity but there is some and perhaps more than is apparent. There should be more opportunities for cultural sharing. Within 30-45 minute are many Amish farms and stores, a large traditionalist Roman Catholic seminary, and Yogaville, an ashram. With Broadband - which many areas do not have - there are boundless cultural experiences, and for live cultural diversity there is Charlottesville, Richmond, and Durham & Raleigh, and also Lynchburg.

Many retirees enjoy the quieter and more (or very much more) affordable area. Farmville town has some important sustaining businesses, including Greenfront, which is essential for economic well being of the town proper. More regional or state attractions should be located here, perhaps in conjunction with Greenfront, the state parks, and the two colleges. Local agriculture might be advanced more with more products raised and prepared, for marketing locally, regionally, and nationally. These could become attracters (e.g. think of what Ben & Jerry's did for rural Vermont!).

The region needs active talent committed to growing the region's successes: higher achievement in public schools, more and better specialties in health care services (including dental, mental health, senior services, etc.) We have generally good highway systems with some improvements needed, but essential for coherence in the region is reliable affordable Broadband and local/regional media that attend to concerns of the area, not captive to national cultural and political issues.
