Cultural or Historical Interests
Most people have come to the United States from other places and settled in the area all hoping to achieve a better life for themselves and their children. Most people are Dominican or Puerto Rican as well as immigrants or children of immigrants so the need to feel connected to the motherland and those around you that also want that is what attracts people to one another.
Community Activities and Services
Bars and Parks. Everything is located in downtown Lawrence mostly.
Economic or Environmental Interests
So many different jobs are held by those around me, I’d say mainly laborers or people who work in physically demanding fields.
Community Needs and Concerns
The community is highly populated and very dense. Lots of people share a very small space. Not enough greenery/nature around. Roads are also not as managed as they should be so they get full of potholes easily. I’d say making more effective use of the space we have here. For such a high population the space isn’t used properly. More affordable housing and resources for those in need should be more accessible to the community.

Community Activities and Services

Economic or Environmental Interests
Lack of community control of economic development resources that would strengthen environmental stability. Non profits control all of the money. Dirty rivers. Gas explosions still having impact. Poor urban soil quality.
Community Needs and Concerns
Grassroots empowerment. Preventing the displacement of the poor through gentrification. Non-profit control of resources and decision making means grassroots everyday people have less access to direct democracy. Changing the toxic political culture. Ending sexism, homophobia and transphobia through loosening the grip of conservative Christian influence in the city. Integrative mental health support for youth. End the Lawrence public schools receivership and give control back to the School Committee.

Cultural or Historical Interests
We have lots of families here, I see lots of small kids (under 12 and a few under 6) Some are retired, a few are unemployed. Two of my neighbors work in the non-profit sector. One is in hospitality (works at a hotel). A few are in retail. One is a factory worker. My partner is a dogwalker and I'm underemployed / do a lot of volunteer work right now. One of my neighbors is special needs and goes to a day program to work.
Community Activities and Services
I usually socialize with my neighbors when I see them on walks; we don't have a park that is super close. Many of the neighborhood kids play/ride scooters in a parking lot next to my house. One of the houses plays music on Saturday nights from outside speakers, lots of friends and family join them. It's very residential so we don't have a ton right in the neighborhood. There are a few buses that pick up right at the corner of my street and the commuter rail is better accessed by car or bike (I normally bike to the Andover station to save a buck). The Greater Lawrence Community Health Center is very close to us on 114, a few of my neighbors got vaccinated there... Lawrence general is far but
Economic or Environmental Interests
Our neighborhood went through the gasfires together, and now the pandemic.Longer term, I believe that many of the single family homes were built by the same architect as workforce housing for people working in factories in Lawrence. Those houses are very similar and mainly across South Broadway from where I live.My main concern is natural gas, due to our experience with the gas fires here. I worry about its effects on health as well as the possibility of another disaster. And our reliance on fossil fuels. Another concern I have is tree cover and its effect on temperatures. Litter is pretty bad here and that worries me because it blocks the drains when we have heavy rain and the street
Community Needs and Concerns
Language access. More farmers' markets/access to produce. We have a lot of children and families here who would benefit from more outdoor spaces and gardens. Rent control/rent assistance. More opportunities to buy apartments rather than rent (most apartments are exclusively for renters, but condo ownership could be a step for many to stay in Lawrence longer-term who may not want the responsibility/cost burden of a whole house).

Massachusetts Communities of Interest
Aug. 10, 2021
Cultural or Historical Interests
Fall River has a history of large immigrant communities of Portuguese descent (the Azores, mainland Portugal) and of indigent recent immigrants and their families (immigrating within the last 25 years). Beginning in the early 1980s, a Cambodian refugee community came to Fall River, hosted by several churches, particularly St. Luke's Episcopal Church. Immigrant communities are growing from Brazil, Columbia, Ecuador, El Salvador (a mixture of Hispanic populations). Each year, particularly May-September Portuguese feasts and festivals hosted by churches and social organizations are very common. The Catholic Church is still a central institution and hosts cultural events throughout the year.
Community Activities and Services
The Portuguese community gathers at church (the Catholic Church) and among social/cultural/sports clubs, especially the Portuguese men. The yearly feasts and festivals are a large social space among the Portuguese. Kennedy Park and The Gates are also sites for Portuguese festivals/events. Boys & Girls Club and the YMCA are also widely used among the community, particularly the Y. Battleship Cove attracts some tourists, with the waterfront area. The Buddhist Temple hosts a New Year's Celebration around the Lunar New Year.
Economic or Environmental Interests
Factories/manufacturers still employ a percentage of Fall River residents, along with the service industry and health care facilities (St. Anne's and Charlton Memorial). Also, Bristol Community College is located in Fall River. Many from the Portuguese and Brazilian communities work in infrastructure (road construction, landscaping) and/or cleaning services.
Community Needs and Concerns
Fall River is not a large city (90,000 population), but is represented at the Congressional level by two Congress people.

North of Main is the project focused on revitalization of the area through arts, culture, and other mechanisms; involves the university. The largest employers in the region are the hospitals, largest is UMass Memorial. Other large employers are Fitchburg State University, ARC, and manufacturing industry, especially plastics (but manufacturing is dying off). The primary language is Spanish and also some Kiche of the Guatemalan indigenous community. Every September there is a celebration for Salvadoran Independence Day in Riverside Park. New Bedford has experienced recent immigration from Guatamala and Honduras and El Salvador and Dominican Republic. Puerto Ricans also came in larger numbers after the hurricane. There is a mixture of status, with undocumented (Central Americans) and citizens (Puerto Ricans).
Community Activities and Services
The Hispanic community of New Bedford gathers in the 48 Hispanic churches of the City; sports fields such as Ashley Park on Rivet St, Mt. Pleasant St baseball field, park at Presidential Heights, and baseball fields of Buttonwood Park and the soccer fields of Riverside Park; and bars. House parties also occupy social time concentrated in public housing around the City. This community also has a Mexican restaurant, a Dominican food store, Price Rite and Seabra where a lot of Hispanics shop. There are a lot of beaches in the area where Hispanic people go. In the north of New Bedford we go to the Market Basket, Elizabeth Restaurant, La Raza, etc. Our Lady of Guadalupe and San Antonio churches.
Economic or Environmental Interests
The Hispanic community works in factories and fish houses of the New Bedford port. Hispanic women tend to work as CNAs, housekeepers, and in supermarkets. Substandard housing is a concern among the Hispanic community, with poor conditions of rodents and code violations. Overcrowding is common in housing units. There are constant complaints about working conditions and the environment of the fish houses.
Community Needs and Concerns
Lack of access to needed services due to language barriers is a big problem. Lack of interpreters in all sectors (ex. waiting for over an hour for an interpreter in medical settings; being turned away from municipal services because of lack of interpreters; being told they cannot access job training programs or access to Dept of Children and Family Services due to lack of interpreters or Spanish speaking social workers. A general lack of access to health insurance due to immigration status. Mental health and substance abuse are also major concerns of this community, related to substandard living conditions and the acculturation stress (stress of living as a Hispanic in the US).

Chinese Diaspora, urban geography (part of neighborhood character), working class/lower income relative to adjacent areas. This was once a continuous community with a lot of Chinese residents as well as Latinx and Black residents. There still are a lot of concentrations of Chinese residents and some Latinx residents.
Community Activities and Services
City Hall geographically near, BPL Chinatown, Tufts Medical. Variety of community-based businesses and organizations contribute to social fabric. People all through Chinatown and the South End come to Chinatown for service, groceries, and participation in anything.
Economic or Environmental Interests
Mostly lower-income residents who are in service industries and other kinds of low wage work. Working-class elderly. A lot of air quality concerns, heat islands, flooding. Most egregious urban heat island in Boston, most polluted area of city (heavily impacted by turnpike), little greenspace.
Community Needs and Concerns
Chinatown-Bay Village heavily impacted by gentrification, environmental pressure, and need for more equitable public and social health infrastructure. A lot of common economic justice (worker rights, affordable housing, opportunities for home ownership, workforce investment, etc) and immigrant rights issues (including language access).

Community Activities and Services
Fields Corner shops and library. Hemenway Park. MBTA: Fields Corner, Shawmut stations. Dorchester Art Project. Shopping center, town field, Ronan park, T station, boys & girls club, family & youth center, restaurants, bars.
Economic or Environmental Interests
Lack of tree cover. Auto emissions from 93. We live in a heat island, the lack of trees is astounding & makes it extremely difficult to get relief from the heat & humidity, certain streets have no trees at all. We are in a climate emergency & not enough is being done to address it. Also the garbage & lack of composting creates lots of rats & mice in the neighborhood, folks leave scraps of food out everywhere thinking to help the animals but it doesn't.
Community Needs and Concerns
Politicians should know that people want to be able to stay in Dorchester. We need more housing at all price points. So there is a big divide between those on the 'hill's vs those us who aren't. And the places w/ money are Popes Hill, Jones Hill, Ashmont Hill, Codman Hill, Neponset Hill, Savin Hill have all the best everything. The amount of new housing being built is not for us, we can't afford these bright, shiny, new apt/condos. They have to consider where the people who live in apt building or triple deckers are not making six figure salaries & can't manage moving when rents get jacked up either. Housing is a human right.

Much of Chelsea and this region use social services such as food distribution, immigration support, emergency housing support, housing case management, and workforce development services.
Community Activities and Services
Much of Chelsea and this region share Latin American culture and history. Shared language and immigration status.
Economic or Environmental Interests
Much of Chelsea and this region have a high percentage of residents that work in the food service and hospitality industries. Many part-time and seasonal employees. Generally low-income community. Many are forced to sublease because they cannot afford rent in now-gentrified neighborhoods. Located next to the airport, the Tobin Bridge, and home to the New England Produce Center and Salt Piles, and houses 100% of Logan Airport's Jetfule, so there are thousands of trucks going in and out of our city each day bringing necessities to the rest of Massachusetts. This all contributes pollution and diesel particulate matter into our air, and affecting our resident's health outcomes.
Community Needs and Concerns
The community is united by its need for affordable housing, rent control, increased social services, and increased funding for public infrastructure and education. Community was particularly impacted by community spread of COVID-19. Cultural or Historical Interests
We are very culturally rooted and celebrating our religious festivities is something that we are really proud of. We celebrate the Holy ghost and are very faithful and devoted to this spiritual belief. We organize dinners and sell tickets all year long to help our church. Also, when someone in our community is in need we organize events to help one another. We use the Band Club and Don Carlos Club to gather and celebrate our special occasions like birthdays, first communions, graduations, etc.
Community Activities and Services
My community is made of people that immigrated here in the late 70's from a small town in Sao Miguel Azores called Agua Retorta. We all attend Saint Anthony of Padua church located on Bedford St because most people lived around the area of the church. There is still a big portion of our community that lives in this area, including myself. We shop all over the city but we mostly love to shop in small markets that have the Portuguese products like Portugalia Marketplace, Chaves Market, Amaral's market.
Economic or Environmental Interests
Our residents are employed in several places, some even owe their own small businesses. We are very hard workers and most men work in construction and landscape. Women work on manufactural industries, small businesses, restaurants, etc. Most of the members of our community's are home owners. Some own multi family homes others own single family homes.
Community Needs and Concerns
What our community see's as major needs is more employment for young adults. More support for people suffering from mental health issues and affordable or free healthcare specially for the elderly. We also worry about our children and their education. Our schools need to keep the good teachers and offer better paying jobs. Also, college education needs to be free

Cultural or Historical Interests
My community is made of Cambodian's that live a little bit all over the city of Fall River. We arrived here in the early 80's and most of us came as refugee's. St. Luke's church was our home and that community welcomed us. Rev. Jim Hornsby accommodated many in his home until we were settled (children's in school, adults with jobs and apartments). In the beginning it was very hard for us because we didn't feel very welcomed by the community and it was hard to get a job or find an apartment for our family.Until today, our community is very rooted in our traditions and culture. We have a dance group with 15 elements that performs in cultural and private events. Some speak English but most Khmer.
Community Activities and Services
People in my community gather at Church (St. Luke's Episcopal Church in Fall River) and at the Buddhist Temple. Wedding celebrations are done at the Temple. We also use social clubs in Fall River to celebrate special occasions (graduations and birthday's) such as the Liberal Club. For healthcare services we mainly use the Health First medical center and Saint Anne's Hospital. My community shops in two local supermarkets that sell Asian food, one located on Pleasant St (Flint area) and one located on Quequechan St. Some of us have cars but some of us depend on our family and friends to get around or on public transportation.
Economic or Environmental Interests
The Cambodian community is mostly employed locally by owning their small businesses (nail salon's). Some work in other cities and carpool with each other to get around. Our communities main concern is around housing. We are afraid that rents are going to increase and we are going to be unable to pay our rents. Our city needs more jobs for our youth
Community Needs and Concerns
Our community needs to be kept in the same district so that we can elect someone that represents us, that looks like us and that has our same interests. We have to feel that we are part of this community and not left behind.

There has been a lack of city services in these neighborhoods. This area is a little less walkable and more car-dependent, than other parts of the city. Transportation is an ongoing need.

Cultural or Historical Interests
In this part of New Bedford, it is the "gateway" of the gateway city of New Bedford. Generations of immigrants have settled in this part of New Bedford: French Canadian, Portuguese, Azorean and Medeiran Portuguese, and more recently the Mayan Kiche Guatemalan community, and other Central American communities (ex. Honduran, Salvadoran), and more newly arrived Cape Verdean immigrants. Currently both the Guatemalan and Portuguese communities are influential in the community.
Community Activities and Services
This part of New Bedford is a busy commercial coorridor around Acushnet Avenue, with many "mom and pop" stores. It is a walkable area, with dense population and multi-family houses (double and triple deckers). In this area people gather and socialize in Riverside Park and Brooklawn Park and in churches such as St. Anthony of Padua and Immaculate Conception and Our Lady of Perpetual Help and St. Joseph's Catholic Churches, and the Feast Grounds (related to Immaculate Conception Church), and social clubs such as ethnically defined, Portuguese community such as the Medeiran Club, Portuguese Sports Association Club, etc. A number of storefront churches continue to emerge on Acushnet Avenue.
Economic or Environmental Interests
Members of this area of New Bedford, esp. the Central America community are employed in seafood processing and in tire recycling and warehousing. Manufacturing and the service industries are also major employers. Environmental concerns include the Acushnet River being a PCB contamination site from manufacturing along the river. The site has been dredged, and is still a part of a flood zone. Because of the dense nature of the neighborhood and the older housing stock, cooling has been an issue in terms of keeping a densely packed area cool - overheating is an issue putting residents at risk.
Community Needs and Concerns
This area of New Bedford has suffered many years of dis-investment and lack of attention by elected officials. Key institutions like healthcare and banking institutions have dis-invested from this neighborhood. There are ongoing issues of blight and neglect in city services in the neighborhood. There is a lack of representation among elected officials to reflect the composition of this neighborhood, both locally and at the state level.

Our neighborhood is an intergenerational, multicultural, working class immigrant community. The population size of the neighborhood has increased due to the new development at 1 Beachmont. Along with 1 Beachmont, the redevelopment of Suffolk Downs will shift the neighborhood demographic. This neighborhood has a high North African and Latinx population.
Community Activities and Services
A new location of the Bosniak Society of Boston has been established in the Beachmont area to allow for religious gatherings. The Beachmont and Seacoast School building is home to Frederick’s Park, which consists of a playground, baseball field, and courts. Aside from this park, the Louis Pasteur playground, Crescent Ave Mini Park, Winthrop Ave basketball court and Short Beach offer spaces for recreation for children and families across the neighborhood.
Economic or Environmental Interests
The Beachmont neighborhood is united by the Beachmont train station, which residents use to commute to jobs in Boston. Around this station, many restaurants, bakeries, and stores introduce residents to the foods of the cultures present in Beachmont. There are barber shops, laundromats, and dry cleaning locations. Additionally, the Shops at Suffolk Downs provide more options for residents to eat and purchase groceries.
Community Needs and Concerns
The Beachmont Improvement Committee is a neighborhood group that consists mostly of older retired residents who want to beautify and build an inclusive community. They host an annual Multicultural Festival to celebrate the diverse cultures and small businesses in their commercial corridor. The Committee needs a separate space for meetings since it meets at the police station, which lacks accessibility. Additional Concerns: Gentrification displacement Tenants rights Loss of cultural diversity Lack of representation at City Council Flooding in Beachmont Need for affordable housing Traffic and a need for improved infrastructure Community events for the kids

We are close to public transportation with access to Revere beach. There are 3 annual festivals: the Shirley Ave Cultural Festival, Khmer New Year, and the Moroccan Festival. In the last 5 years, private developers increased the housing stock but none are affordable for most of the working class and immigrant community. Some families live in crowded apartments along the commercial corridor while other parts of the neighborhood have new owners occupying single family homes. Revere Housing Authority and The Neighborhood Developers own most of the affordable housing. We have new neighbors who seek connection to the community through food but might feel disconnected socially.
Community Activities and Services
We have 3 organizations in this neighborhood that provide social and education services, citywide but 2 of the organizations have outgrown their space as the needs of the community have increased. There are minimal community accessible spaces that are welcoming to ALL residents.Revere Youth in Action - a youth organization seeking to empower youth and working in coalition for social and education justice Women Encouraging Empowerment - direct services provider focussing on empowering immigrant women and families CAPIC - Headstart programThere are also 2 parks in our neighborhood, 1 of which is the location of the summer free lunch program.
Economic or Environmental Interests
Over the last few decades, we experienced many waves of immigration from all over. Our neighborhood is the gateway for new residents from out of state and country. We find community through various shops and restaurants in the commercial corridor of Shirley Ave. In the last decade, more resources flowed into the community. It is a walkable neighborhood and offers a range of services such as a pharmacy, laundromats, convenience stores, etc.

Some of us are renters and some of us are homeowners. Most of our immigrant community is concentrated in the Shirley Ave and Beachmont neighborhoods. We are a diverse intergenerational and multicultural community with various income ranges. Our people come from Central/South America, North Africa, Middle East, Southeast/South Asia, the Carribean, East Asia, and Europe.
Community Activities and Services
We come together through shared faith, cultural festivals/community gatherings, food and diverse commercial corridors. We value access to affordable healthy food, to healthcare centers that offer language access for patients, safe and clean neighborhoods, fully funded public education for our youth, and small business or entrepreneurial opportunities. We need more spaces for our Muslim community to convene.
Economic or Environmental Interests
Loss of local employers when Necco/Showcase/Suffolk Downs shut down and sold to new developers. We need good paying jobs that don’t exploit the working class community. We need access to affordable housing and pathways to homeownership. We need living wage job opportunities close by or near public transportation. Residents who don’t have a college degree must travel far to find jobs and require access to their own cars. We need resources to fund community based organizations and to grow our non-profit infrastructures
Community Needs and Concerns
We are united by our need for a significant improvement in infrastructure, as well as our desire to see a new high school and overall improvements to our youth’s recreational activities. We lack community spaces for all age groups with different abilities. We need a youth center like a YMCA We need a new high school, educators of color, social workers etc. We need more activities for families and an indoor park for winter. The Brazilian community is very connected by their language, food and products. They are very religious and use the churches as a important place to meet people, find help or food. There’s also a online radio station based in the Cape that help and inform immigrants. As said before, this new group of immigrants (that now are US citizens) could bring more diversity and opportunities to the Brazilian community, they probably will get more education than their parents and will invest in business or services in Cape cities. Their past is very similar and we can understand their willing to progress in the Cape Cod area.
Community Activities and Services
The Brazilian community in Cape Cod is smaller if we compare to other regions in MA. With this new government taking power we notice a new group of immigrants arriving, they are the children of older immigrants who have born in the Cape but have left to Brazil. Now this group is comming back to study and live in Cape Cod region, mostly teenagers, they now are students in public schools. Brazilian are distributed in Barnstable, Hyannis, Fallmouth, Orleans and Martha' Vineyard The immigrants see Cape Cod as tourist destination full work opportunities. The most common gathering places are Public Schools, restaurants, churches, little markets, car auto shop and the new help center.
Economic or Environmental Interests
This community work mostly in the service industry – restaurants, beauty salons, construction, etc. They also have several Family-owner business. The region economy is very dependent on tourism and during the winter season find work is a challenge for many immigrants.
Community Needs and Concerns
For the big part of immigrants documents are still a big issue, the fear exist and is part of their daily life. The driver’s license is an important topic as well, driving a car is crucial to work and live in the Cape, not been able to have a registration make life hard for so many immigrants. Climate change is real and a challenge for the Cape Cod region, lots of people could lose their Jobs and homes.

Language, Religion, music, food and dance are the most important ways for this group to bond. Like others Brazilians in MA, the majority came from Minas Gerais State in Brazil. The Bakery, the Brazilian barbecue, te capoeira (tradition dance/fight) are important for that community to keep their traditions. Brazilian events such as music concerts and the Brazilian Independence day are very important to keep showing the importance of this community for Everett’s developing.
Community Activities and Services
The Brazilian community in Everett is one of the largest in MA, very conservative, very religious and less educated. The immigration wave Started in the 80’s and city keep receiving new immigrants till today. The evangelical church have a huge impact in this population and is a important space for the majority of Brazilians. The most common places are Churches, Public Schools, restaurants, little markets, car dealership, beauty salon, etc. Its important highlight that the biggest group of Brazilian business are in the main roads of the city. As a city of minorities these different groups of immigrants live together and are distributed in the hole city.
Economic or Environmental Interests
Entrepreneurship is a big characteristic in the Brazilian community, driving Broadway avenue we can see a big offer of Brazilian business and services. They also work in different fields such as domestic workers, beauty salons, restaurants, as social workers, translators, Uber drivers, etc. Construction is a big source of employment for this group.
Community Needs and Concerns
Representation is very important, many undocumented immigrants still think they are invisible to the government and are afraid to answer the Census, because of that Everett probably has more people than it seems and struggle during the pandemic. As a religious and conservative group it is a challenge to make they speak loud and be notice. It seems like Malden is very close and redistricting could put more liberal people from there in the Everett districts, that could change this scenario and bring more fair representation.

Brazilian COIs - Framingham
Brazilian Women's Group
Brazilian COIs in Massachussets
July 29, 2021
Cultural or Historical Interests
The first Brazilian immigrants that came to Framingham were drawn to the low rents and strong economic potential, allowing them to pursue new commercial activities or business ventures. Population loss in the 90s meant that newly arrived immigrants were able to create a strong community of their own while growing their businesses. Most of these immigrants come from the Minas Gerais region, which drives deeper bonds of unity among them. Following their lead, friends and family soon followed, resulting in an even larger and more tight-knit community.
Community Activities and Services
The highest concentration of Brazilian immigrants can be found in Framingham. The first wave began in the 80s-90s, but since the year 2000 there has been an influx in new arrivals. Around both the southern part of the city and Ashland, there are abundant Brazilian-owned businesses and services. This includes restaurants, accounting services, dentists, etc. It’s common to hear Portugese on the street; there is a strong sense of immigrant community here. Similar to other Brazilian communities in Massachusetts, community help centers and churches are of utmost importance. This includes places like The Brazilian American Center – BRACE, the Saint Tarcisius Parish, and the MAPS.
Economic or Environmental Interests
The Brazilian community has created numerous family-owned businesses, but it also comprises a strong workforce in the restaurant industry, supermarkets, car dealerships, house cleaning services, etc. Most of them are employed and require a car to work. In general, the older immigrant population has a more stable life and livelihood. Many of these men work in construction, whether they’re employed by someone else or own their own business. Unemployment is a large concern for this group, particularly in the context of the pandemic. As more new immigrants arrive, increasing numbers of women and children have sought out assistance from the community help centers and churches.
Community Needs and Concerns
This community is concentrated around the southern areas of Framingham and Ashland, and they represent the largest group of Brazilian immigrants in the greater community. As a result, they hold distinct power as it relates to political organization and voting. They are a strong group and want to keep it that way. Stolen wages, uncompensated labor, and barriers to obtaining a driver’s license are the primary issues faced by the state’s growing population of Brazilians, both documented and undocumented. Lack of legal status leaves them in limbo. Additionally, immigrants with specialized skills - such as those who previously worked in the medical field - are forced to take on menial work.

Cultural or Historical Interests
The primary sources of community building are food, language, and Brazilian products. There are many Brazilian supermarkets in Somerville, as well as restaurants, beauty salons, capoeira and jiu-jitsu schools. These places serve to bring people together. It’s estimated that the majority of Brazilian immigrants come from Minas Gerais, an area rich in mica which was an important mineral for the United States during the war. Therefore, the exchange between Massachusetts and the Minas Gerais region has a long history and helps explain why so many Brazilians emigrated from the same place.
Community Activities and Services
The Brazilian community in Somerville comprises older immigrants who came to the Boston area in the 80’s-90’s, indicated by relative stability as well as age. Their children went through the public school system and now are graduating from university. The most common gathering places for this group are public schools, restaurants, jiu-jitsu and capoeira schools, neighborhood markets, car dealerships, etc. Sommerville boasts quality community centers and churches that are a safe place for immigrants to gather, for example: Scalabrini Cultural & Assistance Center, MAPS, Saint Anthony of Padua Church, Mira Coalition, Somerviva, etc. Brazilian Times, a Brazilian newspaper was found here too.
Economic or Environmental Interests
In Somerville, this group of older immigrants that created a community of family-owned and small businesses provided a support network to newly arrived friends, family, and other undocumented folks. The growing clientele led to even more growth and development for the small business sector. The onset of the COVID-19 pandemic resulted in unexpected losses in traffic and revenue, leading to business closures.
Community Needs and Concerns
The extension of the Green line is a good example of the potential changes that could take place, not only for Brazilian businesses but also for the vulnerable immigrant community. An increase in rents could push them out toward more affordable areas.

Brazilian COIs in Massachussets
July 29, 2021
Cultural or Historical Interests
The community comprises older immigrants that started coming to the US in the 80’s and the subsequent generations. However, newly arrived immigrants are increasingly present in this community and have a hard time integrating. A common shared experience is that the majority of this group is undocumented. Language, music, and food are the primary pillars that create an instant bond. We can use the Brazilian Independence Day Festival at Soldiers Field as a great example of the power of community.
Community Activities and Services
The Brazilian community is more likely to be found at Little Brazilian markets, Brazilian shops, and bakeries. This neighborhood has different Immigrant Centers that help the majority of Brazilians such as the Brazilian Women's Group, Massachusetts Alliance of Portuguese Speakers, Brazilian Work Center, Allston-Brighton Family Support Network, Allston Brighton Health Collaborative, etc. We could also say that churches are important sources of information that provide help to immigrants. The Saint Anthony Parish has a community center and offers services in Portuguese. The community uses public and private transportation; the area is served by bus lines 501, 57, 65, and train and subway.
Economic or Environmental Interests
The Brazilian community is entrepreneurial and you can see them working across different fields. It is common for them to be domestic workers, beauty salons employees, and food service workers, as social workers, translators, Uber drivers, etc. Many Brazilians also work in trade and construction; they also work as painters, for siding and roofing companies, etc. Here, one of the most pressing issues is related to accidents in the workplace and barriers to fair wages and compensation.
Community Needs and Concerns
Fear is still a common emotion among the community. As we talk about immigration status and documented people, we can see the fear in their eyes. It’s clear that most of them want legal documentation status to start a new life; their biggest dream is to open their own business or go back to school, things that seem impossible without proper documentation. Another key problem is obtaining a driver’s license, as a majority of people have lost their jobs or need to use a car to work. This fact that immigrants cannot obtain a driver’s license is a pressing issue for many within the Brazilian community.

Pleasant St baseball field, park at Presidential Heights, and baseball fields of Buttonwood Park and the soccer fields of Riverside Park; and bars. House parties also occupy social time concentrated in public housing around the City.

Cape Verdean Community of New Bedford
Drawing Democracy Coalition
Massachusetts Communities of Interest
July 28, 2021
Cultural or Historical Interests
The Cape Verdean community came to New Bedford through the whaling industry in the 1800s and founded the first Cape Verdean Catholic Church in the Americas, Our Lady of the Assumption. Generations continued to come to the area from the Cape Verde islands. Newer generations of Cape Verdeans continue to immigrate to New Bedford. The Ernestina is a historic ship that is anchored in the New Bedford port. Many sites in New Bedford are named after Cape Verdeans: Judge George Leighton US Post Office (Anglo-cized), Alfred J Gomes School, Joe Goncalves Way, Manuel Costa Street, Ben Rose Gardens, John B DeValles School. Representative Thomas Lopes was the first Cape Verdean State Representative.
Community Activities and Services
The Cape Verdean community of New Bedford socializes and gathers at Our Lady of the Assumption Catholic Parish, the Nazarene Church, the Bisca Club, the Cape Verdean American Veterans Association, Montes Park, and NAACP Center.
Economic or Environmental Interests
Many Cape Verdean residents of New Bedford are currently employed at Joseph Abboud clothing manufacturing, Titleist, and in the healthcare industry (home health aides, nursing homes, St. Luke's Hospital), housekeeping, educators in the schools (teachers/administrators).
Community Needs and Concerns
New Bedford is home to newer waves of immigrants that still include Cape Verde but also Central America. English language needs of the community continue to grow. Despite the amount of immigrants, there is a need for more diversity in City leadership, in the school system, among small business owners. Much leadership is still White male. All 5 State representatives are White male. The leadership does not represent demographics of the City. New Bedford has historical significance as "the City who lit the world" with whale oil in the 1800s, a home to Frederick Douglass and Polly Johnson, and a part of the Underground Railroad, yet the current view of the City does not match in significance.

My community is a gateway community that has seen skyrocketing rents and home prices, which has driven displacement to massive levels. Many people in the neighborhood practice Catholicism and identify as Christians. We have a lot of younger professionals that have moved into the neighborhood. Their has always been a strong immigrant presence in the neighborhood and many immigrants in the neighborhood lack status which puts many families in a difficult place.
Community Activities and Services
My community is made up of a diverse set of people with a strong Latinx and Italian American presence. Neighborhood residents of all backgrounds enjoy gathering in public park and use the local library. Our Saviour’s Lutheran Churched has served as a critical place for the neighborhood to gather. It currently houses the community soup kitchen, anti-displacement, work safety and other organizations and services.
Economic or Environmental Interests
My community has many people working in restaurant and hospitality. Relying on public transportation to get them to and from work. It is also next to the airport which brings air quality problems to the neighborhood.
Community Needs and Concerns
Our community is currently in one district and it would be great to keep the community that way.

West Roxbury is predominantly Roman Catholic, white with English as the primary language. There are several Roman Catholic churches that are attended by large groups of people. There is also a Reconstructionist synagogue that has members from West Roxbury but also neighboring communities. There is some diversity in the community as well, represented in the three BPS elementary schools in the neighborhood. One of the biggest and most important areas in West Rox is Millenium Park, it is a place where many many people gather, walk their dogs, fly kites, ride bikes, etc..
Community Activities and Services
My community is made up of many places to gather Centre St. is the main road coming through the neighborhood and is full of shops, the local grocery store, several independently owned restaurants, local toy store, a local hardware store, a local bike shop, doggie day care, several nail salons. We also have a recently renovated YMCA that is a center of activity. Another spot where LOTS of people gather are several local ball fields, playgrounds and of course Millenium Park There are also many people who attend local catholic churches, Holy Name and St Theresa's are the largest.
Economic or Environmental Interests
West Roxbury has a high percentage of police and fire fighters from the city of Boston. We also have lots of Nurses, Doctors and teachers here as well. Many people work in downtown Boston and commute via the commuter rail of which there are three stops in West Roxbury. There are local concerns( and citywide) about the local Quarry and the recent gas pipeline that was laid under the street right through the center of the neighborhood. With the large blasts happening in the quarry daily people fear explosions that would be catastrophic. On another note, the community is very proud of the creation of Millenium park, from it's former role as city dump!

The Burmese community started to move to Worcester around 2010 from refugee camps from Burma, Thailand and Malaysia. Languages: Burmese, Karen, Karenni, Chin. Religion is fairly wide from Buddhism, Christian, Catholic, Muslim. Many families are starting to leave Worcester because the rent is too expensive and impossible to buy a home. Many want to live where there's a bigger Burmese community and resources. Many people are ELL and often don't speak much English so spaces don't feel accessible to them (libraries, schools, etc).
Community Activities and Services
Groceries and shopping: Walmart, Mekong International Market, Price Rite. Church: Worcester Baptist Church and Blessed Sacrament Church. Parks: Crystal Park and Camp St Park (also has community garden).
Economic or Environmental Interests
Often families average income is $30k-40k with roughly 3-5 people. In the beginning of the migration over, many Burmese folks were in the restaurant industry. Now it has shifted to working in a factory 48forty Solution (in Westborough), TJ Maxx, cleaning companies. Often they have to go outside of Worcester to find jobs.
Community Needs and Concerns
-Worried that both parents are working so much to survive therefore the family/children don't have their presence around impacting the relationships and future of their children. (Capitalism) -Youth not going to college because their children have not had higher education. Limited access. Youth often end up working to support the family at an early age and don't get to focus on their future. - More free/ low cost entertainment spaces. Many in their community facing depression/ mental health but just stay at home because there's no healthy spaces or outlets. - There should be more job opportunities in Worcester.

This area of New Bedford is increasingly diverse. It has a shared Portuguese history, with immigrants from Portugual, particularly the Azores. Cape Verdean immigrants also have a shared history with the whaling and fishing industry rooted in New Bedford. New Bedford was called "The City that Lit the World", with whaling oil sent globally. Newer immigrant communities from Guatamela and additional Central American countries, Haiti, Dominican Republic compose a growing number percentage of the population. Portuguese Feasts happen such as the Day of Portugal, the Cape Verdean Independence Day festivities. Our Lady of the Assumption is the first Cape Verdean Catholic Parish in North America.
Community Activities and Services
This area of New Bedford has gathering spaces in parks such as Montes Park, Harrington Park, Hazelwoord Park along with the beaches, along with the Cape Verdean Veterans Hall, Doug's House of Harmony. The downtown areas is also included with recreation and arts activities, along with the Boys & Girls Club and Dennison Memorial. Churches also remain a central gathering spot, particularly Catholic Churches, with a growing presence of immigrant independent Protestant churches.
Economic or Environmental Interests
Major employers in the areas include the Acushnet Company/Titleist, Joseph Abboud clothing company, and the fishing industry such as the Blue Harvest Fisheries. New Bedford remains the number one fishing port in the United States. Many people are also employed by the City of New Bedford within this district and SouthCoast Health (St. Luke's Hospital), and the downtown district (restaurants, museums, etc)
Community Needs and Concerns
New Bedford has 5 different state representatives, in a population of 100,000. Some of them do not always represent the communities' needs and views in favor of surrounding cities and towns that tend to be White and wealthier. There is interest by City leaders in increasing the district's tourism and attracting residents from Boston to live in the City. However this is resulting in gentrification and increased costs of living, particularly with housing.

Community Activities and Services
The immigrant population in Braintree is growing. The Asian Community is currently 13.8%, and continues to grow. One contributing factor to the growing population could be attributed to the fact that many families living in Quincy tend to move towards Braintree for a more family oriented community, good schools, and convenient location. DRAFT Immigrant Community in Fall River
Drawing Democracy Coalition
Massachusetts Communities of Interest
June 15, 2021
Cultural or Historical Interests
Fall River has a history of large immigrant communities of Portuguese descent (the Azores, mainland Portugal). Beginning in the early 1980s, a Cambodian refugee community came to Fall River, hosted by several churches, particularly St. Luke's Episcopal Church. More recently, immigrant communities are growing from Brazil, Columbia, Ecuador, El Salvador (a mixture of Hispanic populations). Each year, particularly May-September Portuguese feasts and festivals hosted by churches and social organizations are very common in the City.

Cultural or Historical Interests
Historically, the area rooted in Portuguese immigrants, largely from the Azores. Then, Cape Verdeans working in the fishing and whaling industry. Now, Central American communities present and working in fishing industries. New Bedford is connected to the whaling industry. Called "the oil that lit the world" because the oil from the whales was sent all around the world to light lamps. The city is not looked upon in that way anymore.
Community Activities and Services
A lot of Guatemalan and Portuguese restaurants. Immigration services dedicated to Guatemalans and Portuguese people. Soccer fields servicing both communities as well. Catholic feasts from both of these cultures are celebrated together. Catholic church very central, visible. The Waterfront area is as well. Cape Verdeans are a historic and present immigrant community. Large Cape Verdean Independence Day Festival (July 5).
Economic or Environmental Interests
Main employer is the fishing industry (Guatemalans, Portuguese, etc). Especially communities closer to the water. Bristol Community College is an employer and place of study. UMass Dartmouth and St Lukes Hospital. Building up tourism along the seashore. New Bedford is high in environmental pollution.
Community Needs and Concerns
Building code enforcement is an urgent need. We've had a lot of fires in the last year or two and lost a lot of people. People have been displaced, need housing, clothes, etc. Absentee landlords are a problem. Gentrification is a problem. They're building up the arts community and downtown area around tourism and art, and don't mind that property values are increasing and displacing generations of immigrants and POC. Demographics have changed a lot. Ex) school system is now 50-60% children of color, but school committee is still mostly white, as is city council. Mostly white men at local, state and federal level.
