Many are forced to sublease because they cannot afford rent in now-gentrified neighborhoods. Located next to the airport, the Tobin Bridge, and home to the New England Produce Center and Salt Piles, and houses 100% of Logan Airport's Jetfule, so there are thousands of trucks going in and out of our city each day bringing necessities to the rest of Massachusetts. This all contributes pollution and diesel particulate matter into our air, and affecting our resident's health outcomes.
The community is united by its need for affordable housing, rent control, increased social services, and increased funding for public infrastructure and education. Community was particularly impacted by community spread of COVID-19. Chelsea has the highest asthma hospitalization rates in the state, and amongst the highest rates of heart disease, stroke, and chronic illness.
