You will also find that a lot of the PG County area is religious and Christianity is the most common practice in my community. With over 350 churches in my community, there is a huge Christian presence and it is not unlikely that you will hear people openly talk about God and how he has changed their lives . The First Baptist Church of Glenarden is one of the largest churches with weekly attendance of over 10,000 people. The Baltimore-Washington Parkway is a 29-mile long highway that connects Baltimore and Washington DC.
Prince George’s County Maryland is a county located just West of Washington DC, and a close proximity to other major cities such as Annapolis, Alexandria and Bethesda. PG County was formed in 1696 and was also named after Prince George of Denmark (MNCPPC). My hometown today looks a lot different than it did years ago in 1783, when it was the neighboring county of Annapolis Maryland, which was also the temporary capital of the United States after the signing of the Treaty of Paris (US Naval Academy). Prince George’s County today has a black population of 62%, and my community takes pride in our black culture and continues to strive for a legacy of black excellence.
Being surrounded by bodies of water such as the Anacostia River and Chesapeake Bay has influenced our community by being avid supporters of conserving the bay and having a desire to relieve pollution. The Anacostia River itself flows from Bladensburg, MD to Southeast Washington DC (Anacostia Watershed Society). PG County and Southeast DC are east of the river which has a significantly higher black population than its surrounding areas. Due to the close distance between Southeast DC and PG County, they are a part of our united, yet undefined community.
Both PG County and Southeast DC alike are directly impacted by public issues like police brutality, climate change and racism and these are unfortunate issues that have fortunately allowed us to come together and expand our community. In many cases of crime, both PG County and Metropolitan Police Departments have to work together due to how easy it is for criminals to cross state lines. This happens often where police officers are not able to find leads on certain crimes within their own districts, so they eventually join forces with other departments. If the lines were redistricted in a way that incorporated the Suitland Parkway area with Southeast DC, more victims could have a chance.
