My community is made up of the Pittsburg community in the neighborhood of Atlanta Georgia. It was founded in 1883 as a black working-class suburb alongside the Pegram rail shops. It was named Pittsburgh because the industrial area reminded one of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania and its famous steel mills. It is now one of the most dangerous neighborhoods in the city.
My community is impacted by poverty, low education, unemployment, and high crime rates.
My community is one of the least safe low income neighborhoods in Atlanta. My community need better access to health care, better housing, and better resources for education. The Pittsburg community is at risk of gentrification resulting in the reduction of people of color in their own neighborhood. The Atlanta City Council works to ensure safer and cleaner streets, bolster Atlanta’s economy, and institute many community-based programs. Working hand in hand with Atlanta’s mayor and the members of the executive branch, the Council plays a key part in the budget process and financial well being of Atlanta.
