My community is a mix of native Rochesterians and University of Rochester student rentals. Diverse student groups meet and gather off campus to further their clubs and social circles, and bring patronage to local business. We meet and greet neighbors who have lived in the area for many years.
It's my understanding that the needs of the 19th ward community have historically been underserved. I hope the community's restorative interests can be preserved to undo the decades of red lining that lead to destructive outcomes. The 19th ward community association meets to organize there. There is a pioneer cemetery, which is a historic landmark, that we are seeking to restore into a community garden and tourist destination with guided tours. Representatives who care about this are important.
Lead piping has been major injustice in my community. While extensive surveying and testing has been done to map and remove these hazards, I don't believe lead's presence can be ruled out. Piping may still exist inside homes or between street-level mains and individual houses. I hope all residents have access to prospecting for these pipes, and easy access to lead levels blood testing.
The 19th ward and it's composition is constantly under threat. As the university seeks to expand it's influence, increasing swaths of the ward are converted to student rentals. With this growth in University assets comes heavyhanded protection. UR president shot down a measure to arm off campus police only after strong student backlash. A community housing center, the Plymouth Gardens, is being eyed by the University for conversion into student housing. Residents are facing pressure to move out.
