Community Information

There are over 100 Mosque and religious centers that service the growing Arab population of New Jersey. At least 9 of them are located in Jersey City. “The Heights” area of Jersey City is where many members of our community are located Yousef Saleh is the first-ever Palestinian American Councilman in Jersey City.

Many of the first Arab immigrants to the area came to Jersey City before it was gentrified. Many were driven out because of gentrification to different areas of NJ (mainly Paterson and other areas of Hudson County) Some remained and ended up becoming more affluent as a result of investing in Real Estate

Our community owns apartment complexes and businesses in Jersey City.

Being lumped into the White race category has real and detrimental effects on our community: health, socioeconomic relief, admission into schools, psychological effects, and impact on immigration issues. The population who identified as Arabic-speaking in the U.S. Census grew more than 42% between 2000 and 2017. The number of New Jerseyan who claim Arab ancestry has more than doubled since the Census first measured ethnic origins in 1980, and is among the fastest-growing Arab populations in the country. The Census Bureau estimates the statewide Arab American population is 116,240. The Arab American Institute (AAI) estimates about 257,868 Arab Americans live in New Jersey.
