Community Information

The downtown area is very nice but very expensive, there are many cultural restaurants - a wide variety of different cuisine that people can experience. There are a variety of different churches (AMA, Shiloh Baptist on Davenport Street, St. Paul on Davenport, 1st Baptist on High Street, Emaculate Conception) which serves the diverse community - Somerville is the county seat, so the largest courthouse is, the county jail is in Somerville. Robert Wood Johnson has a major presence in Somerville, and they've taken control of the main hospital. Most students attend Somerville High School, the other high school in the area is Emaculata High School, also in Somerville. There's a Shop Rite.

The Somerville community has changed a lot in recent years. There are many new businesses and residents who have moved into newly constructed townhomes. There are pockets of African Americans and Hispanics that have lived here for decades which are potentially getting displaced due to gentrification.

It's about 50%/50% blue collar and white collar workers. The shopping district on main street has a lot of opportunity for mom and pop shops that are thriving, despite the very high rents. Many people to come to Somerville to shop and to dine. There are the Somerville bike races, which is a big event every year. Every Friday there's an old car show parked on main street, which brings a lot of tourists during the Spring and summer.

The community is getting more expensive; the buildings which are being built are very large condominium buildings all over town in areas which have forced homeowners to sell so they can be built. It doesn't seem like the new condos are affordable for the residents who have been here before, even though they are supposed to have affordable housing.
