My community is made of people that immigrated here in the late 70's from a small town in Sao Miguel Azores called Agua Retorta. We all attend Saint Anthony of Padua church located on Bedford St because most people lived around the area of the church. There is still a big portion of our community that lives in this area, including myself. We shop all over the city but we mostly love to shop in small markets that have the Portuguese products like Portugalia Marketplace, Chaves Market, Amaral's market.
We are very culturally rooted and celebrating our religious festivities is something that we are really proud of. We celebrate the Holy ghost and are very faithful and devoted to this spiritual belief. We organize dinners and sell tickets all year long to help our church. Also, when someone in our community is in need we organize events to help one another. We use the Band Club and Don Carlos Club to gather and celebrate our special occasions like birthdays, first communions, graduations, etc.
Our residents are employed in several places, some even owe their own small businesses. We are very hard workers and most men work in construction and landscape. Women work on manufactural industries, small businesses, restaurants, etc. Most of the members of our community's are home owners. Some own multi family homes others own single family homes.
What our community see's as major needs is more employment for young adults. More support for people suffering from mental health issues and affordable or free healthcare specially for the elderly. We also worry about our children and their education. Our schools need to keep the good teachers and offer better paying jobs. Also, college education needs to be free
