My community is African Americans who have lived on the island since before 1865. We are the descendants of first African American landowners on James Island. We are the descendants of the slaves who worked on the plantations that populated James Island; Grimball, Sol Legare, Dill. We are the descendants of the Freedmen who negotiated tenancy in lieu of sharecropping which allowed for this ownership when the US failed to secure appropriate re

We have been politically disenfranchised since slavery. We, as a unified community, emerged out of slavery, reconstruction, and Jim Crow Segregation to provide providence where nation and state did not. Community, Gullah, close knit and land. Gullah - Vestiges of True African cultural lineage. Unincorporated area, two towns, but one black heritage, cracked by towns, legislative district, and gerrymandered into a republican district
