Community Information

In this community of New Bedford, people gather at Riverside Park. Acushnet Avenue is populated with restaurants, churches, small shops. Ashley Blvd also has Hispanic restaurants, Keila's Place. The area around Achushnet Avenue has various Hispanic restaurants and shops. Particularly the North End area (Acushnet) is easily accessed by walking. Many pedestrians get to places by foot. In this area, Hayden McFadden School has a lot of Spanish-speaking families and hosts community dinners.

The area shows evidence of its French and Portuguese past, but is transitioning to more Hispanic immigrants. The area is heavily Catholic, and Portuguese feasts happen annually in this area, but there is a growing number of Hispanic Pentecostal churches. Hispanic immigrants in this area are mostly Central American.

Residents of this area are employed by Joseph Abboud, various mills/industrial factories, construction work, and fish processing. Issues of lead paint in old tenement buildings.

This area of the City has clusters of people more vulnerability, economically and with immigration status, than in other parts of New Bedford.
