Community Information

housing diversity air quality urban public transit

My community is made up of people who live in downtown Salt Lake City. We mostly gather and socialize within the downtown community, though because of the limited area I think our gathering places extend into other communities as well. Because downtown SLC is fairly small, a lot of the services that we use and need are located outside of the downtown community council area on the periphery. School and child care services are located around the area, rather than directly downtown, including most shopping areas.

Downtown Salt Lake City has existed for over a hundred years, for as long as SLC has been a city. It has historically been a very Mormon-dominated city, though it has become more of a multicultural area over time. Gentrification has become a concern, or has been a concern, for some time as people are moving back to urban cities from more suburban areas.

The service and tourism industries are big for those who live downtown, though I believe they are employed in a wide variety of industries that make up Salt Lake City's and the broader region's base.

This may be more relevant for certain types of districts, but thinking through the interconnected nature of downtown Salt Lake City with the rest of its areas, it really seems like the city should be kept together whenever possible.
