My community is made up of residents from diverse backgrounds who utilize local small businesses, the stores at the South Bay Mall, faith institutions in Roxbury including the Islamic Center of Boston and several churches, and socialize in parks and libraries. Most depend on public transportation and receive their health care from Whittier Street Health Center and other community healthcare centers.
My community is made of African Americans, Latinx, Asians, immigrant groups from African, South and Central America, Caribbean Islands, and Asia. The immigrants are proud of their culture as the acculturate in the US. Approximately 25% of our patients are undocumented including families with children living in poverty. We serve large Christian and Muslim patient based, with strong values and rich arts and culture. They are young families with about 10% being seniors.
Roxbury is an urban neighborhood with exposure to environmental issues.
Housing insecurity is a major issue in Boston! Other social determinants of health in my neighborhood are access to healthcare, jobs and employment, good public schools, transportation, and access to healthy foods.
