Community Information

renewable resources housing voting rights diversity environment

Our community, the Greater Avenues is made up of a diverse population who work together to address issues of common interest such as parks, historic preservation, education, and libraries. The Greater Avenues Community Council, which has representatives from different areas of the Avenues, meets monthly and sends out a monthly newsletter to inform all residents of issues that affect everyone. In the past neighbors have organized to ensure compatible building standards and to help each other with natural disasters such as the windstorm of 2020, the tornado of 1999 and the flood of 1983. These actions helped to save the neighborhood from the effects of natural disasters.

Our community contains a large variety of historical buildings and sites which are very much appreciated by the residents. There are community activities such as the Avenues Street Fair and the artists sponsor an annual art gallery stroll.

We organize an annual cleanup of neighborhood parks and plant trees. Recently a group met with city officials to come up with a plan for the 4th Avenue Well that was needed to supply water to the downtown area that was also compatible with the Memory Grove neighborhood. The result was a building that fit with the character of the neighborhood and also met the city's water needs.

Keep our community in the same district. We work together and help each other to ensure that we keep the character and charm intact and address needs as they arise.
