Community Information

housing healthcare voting rights elderly affordable

My community is mainly made up of people who are either disabled or handicapped. I live in subsidized housing and near this community there are other such properties that are located near middle-income single-family homes. There are many houses of worship nearby, along with quick access to hospital, shopping areas, pharmacies, schools, GSU and other colleges. There is also a newly constructed Senior Citizen Center. Overall, it is a good place to live that has many available resources.

GSU provides our community with many opportunities to cultural information and events. Through its School of Fine Arts residents have access to a mixture of concerts, recitals, museum displays, and plays. This is a lot of growth in an area that was surrounded by cotton and tobacco farming in previous years that presented a main source of employment to many of the town's low income residents. Becoming a college town has put Statesboro on the map. Some historical/famous figures are Wemberly Ponder, Willie Matell, and our Black mayor, Jonathan McCollar.

Economically my community has a great disparity that exists between the educated and under-educated. There are some social programs designed to address the divide, but they are not enough. The promising part is that we can see that progress is being made as we move forward.

As in any community, the needs are many. However, the main problem is the affordable housing shortage . This has created a position of the haves and the have nots. Builders are steadily putting up new very expensive communities without creating resources to address affordable housing. While this remains a great concern, we are hoping that the present leaders will address and add a measure of correction to this condition. I want my community kept in the same district so that we can finish the good work that has already been started.
