We have a lot of folks who use Kiwanis Park as a place to play and exercise. They also use the Endor Iron Fitness Trail. We have a great many churches. We also have good participation with social service organizations like Family Promise and Christians United Outreach Center. We have an active downtown shoppping area and the Temple Theatre is a downtown anchor.
The complexion of Sanford is becoming more diverse. Things were segregated informally until the 2000's. Now there are more Hispanic immigrants than ever before. The three main groups are Blacks, Whites, and Hispanics. We still don't have many AAIP's. But on my street, there is a much bigger racial mix than ever before.
We have a lot of manufacturing that has kept the econmy going. Also lots of health care jobs, educational jobs, and service jobs.
We were targeted as a coal ash dump location recently. As far as I can tell, that has been ended. We also have people coming in to propse fracking, which many citizens oppose. We have a need for affordable housing, especially with all the new industry coming into the county. That being said, there is real friction in the area about how much housing/apartments are being built in traditionally more rural/undeveloped areas.
