My community is made of a diverse population. Many of these individuals socialize at the recreational facilities where schools present local gifted athletes who participate in a variety of sports. It is also fair to say that many people are dedicated members of our various churches, many of which, both Black and White have a rich history of over 150 years. Within minutes of my community we have the health department, hospital, sheriff's office, court house and other city support amenities. It is a good place to live and I have been here in the city for many years, having been born and raised in the rural area of the county.
This is a predominately Christian based community with many city and rural historical churches. It also is one that was greatly impacted by segregation and has progressed towards a better supportive co-existence between all citizens.
The economy here is average when compared to that of other Georgia small cities/counties. Presently, it is easy to find available jobs that come with unacceptable wages. Also between the races, it is easy to see that inequality still exists in the areas of employment positions and pay.
Within the city and in rural areas there exists a disparity in how the streets and roads are maintained. In both areas one can easily and quickly recognize whether they are in a Black or White area by the condition of the pavement, or in the worst case, the dirt they are driving on. While everyone is taxed, those monies are not being used in areas that are in need of road repair, street maintenance, trash removal, clearing of undesirable brush, etc. Sadly, this describes most Black areas. I do not want my community divided up by Redistricting, because now we are in a position to vote for people who share our values as we have hope for a better tomorrow.
