My community includes the small towns of Cave Creek and Carefree. People gather at local coffee shops, the Desert Foothils Library, local restaurants and bars, area churches, the Holland Center, the YMCA and local organizations, such as the Kiwaniis Club, and the Desert Awareness Committee. The area caters to a large tourist population with many shops and restaurants. The area has no public transportation. There is an urgent care center in Carefree and a medical center is being built in Cave Creek. The Foothills Food Bank serves a population that is food deprived with food boxes, financial assistance and help filing for Food Stamps.
Residents are interested in preserving open space and the desert. The Desert Foothills Land Trust has preserved 375 acres of desert. Most community members are of Anglo descent, but there is a small Latinx population in Cave Creek. Residents in Cave Creek are a majority senior population, with the median age in Cave Creek being 58 years (2018). Frequent Arts Festivals are held in Cave Creek and Carefree. Cave Creek has a history of a western lifestyle through mining and cattle ranching. Many horse communities are found in Cave Creek and Cave Creek has a yearly parade and rodeo. Carefree was a planned development with the intention of embedding housing within the natural environment.
Many residents are retired or work from home. Some residents own small businesses and restaurants in the community. Outside of shops, restaurants and grocery stores, there is little employment in the community. Workers need to go south into Phoenix and Scottsdale for employment. Many of the employees of the area shops/restaurants come into the communities during the day from the Phoenix area, as it is too expensive to live here. Water is a concern, with a number of homes in Cave Creek on wells. Also, there have been conflicts between the two communities over the water company and CAP water.
Our communities have nothing in common with Prescott, yet are currently in the same legislative district as Yavapai County. As our communities are dependent economically upon the greater Phoenix/Maricopa area, it would make more sense to have us in a district with the population south of us. I do feel the Cave Creek and Carefree should continue to be together in a district, as we have close proximity and some commonalities.
