Community Information

sea level rise universities large corporations urban white-collar

My community is located in the Financial District and is made up of mostly office workers during the weekdays. Restaurants are packed with post work happy hour crowds. My neighborhood is also part of Pace University's campus, and has college students during the school year. Being near two waterfronts, the East River and Hudson River, both are gathering points for shopping, dining, and entertainment. Close proximity to Fulton Center makes my community a major transportaion hub.

My community was mostly business prior to 9/11. The events of 9/11 devastated the area, but revitalization efforts caused population growth to surge.

Residents are employed in finance, or commute to white color jobs via the city. Close proximity to City Hall and other NYC governmental agencies means many residents work in the public sector. Nearby NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital employees medical staff.

My community changes drastically after working hours and days as thousands of people commute to work during the day and then leave to go home. With the Covid-19 pandemic encouraging more telework, the amount of people commuting to my community drastically decreased. While there has been an increase in people living in the Financial District instead of just community, the future of teleworking makes the future of my neighborhood unclear.
