My community is made of people who care about each other. Many of us are united within our local churches, one of which is St. Paul AME. I can truthfully say that all of us are very concerned regarding our loss of vital services that for many years made us a real community. Those lost services include a hospital, grocery stores, and bank. The nearest hospital is in Vidalia and is not easily accessible, especially for those who lack transportation. Although we are lacking many amenities, we lovingly call this home and we love our community. We do not want it unfairly broken up in the Redistricting process.
The NAACP has a great presence in our community as it offers events for learning and awareness. There is also the Chamber of Commerce that meets once per month and everyone is invited to attend. We are especially proud of our partnership with the Alpha Kappa Alpha, Phi Delta Omega Sorority. They have the Emerging Young Leaders (Grades 7-8), ASCEND (Grades 9-10), and CAP (Grades 11-12 with annual scholarships). Their programs are shared within the 5 surrounding counties of Telfair, Treutlin, Montgomery, and Toombs.
More growth is desperately needed in the entire county that will generate a better economic base and attract many of the services that we have lost over the last few years. Environmentally, the issue of the recurring brown water problem that many residents experience has to be resolved. Leaders need to know about this, and they definitely need to do something about it.
Our community needs more jobs, grocery stores, a hospital or immediate care facility, mass transportation for better access to surrounding counties, and leaders who share in their policy concerns.
