My community gathers around St. Mary's Park because it is located at the center of the neighborhood. Community members congregate in this park to host birthday parties, celebratory events, walk their dogs, take their children out of the house, play sports, or simply speak to other neighbors. The strip next to the park consists of endless fast food restaurants, small businesses, healthcare services, access to public transportation, places of worship and schools.
My community primarily consists of African American and Hispanic residents, most of which are immigrants and first generation Americans. The languages spoken in my community are English and Spanish. There are Mosques and Churches since much of the community is either Muslim, Catholic, or non-affiliated.
Residents are primarily employed in small businesses in the surrounding areas, retail, or fast food. Many community members own small businesses or choose to work in other boroughs. One of the biggest concerns that exists in my community is homelessness and unemployment along with pollution from the excessive use of cars and buses.
Politicians should be concerned with the education system, violence, poverty, and infrastructure within my community. Considering that it is a low-income community, there is excessive violence that exists within it. Moreover, most, if not all, the schools in the neighborhood and surrounding areas are severely underfunded with high drop-out rates. There must also be more programming in the community that the youth can engage in outside of school so they can avoid the streets.
