My communities schools have a variety of after school programs for children. Not only is this helpful with students learning and creativity, but also a big help to the working class parents that make up a big part of this community. It’d be great to see more funding for these programs.
For most of the 20th century east Harlem was an epicenter for many immigrants from other countries, majority Latinx. Most people here speak Spanish (as their first language).
East Harlem (and the rest of Harlem for that matter) suffers from exponentially high levels of pollution and harmful gases in comparison to wealthy parts of Manhattan.
My community (East Harlem) is made up of mostly Latinos (this was a welcoming community to immigrants for a lot of the 20th century). Concerns of poor health and high unemployment issues threaten the lively hood of those in my community. We need increased access to job opportunities and fresh and affordable produce (as a start).
