As a coach and parent, my community is tied to the local school and rec center. Considering school district boundaries might help, but of course even within the school district, there are many divisions and conflicting communities of interest.
There are always ways to divide a community, in our small town it's often by how long you've lived here, and where you were born. That doesn't divide geographically. But most people, no matter how long they've lived here, value the open spaces and small country town feel. Finding ways to support the local farmers and ranchers to prevent families from having to 'sell out' for that last cash crop can help preserve the agricultural ecomomy.
Development pressures are straining the laws designed to protect wildlife habitat. Precious remaining wetlands are being filled without consequences, and abuse/overuse of nearby public lands is hard to manage.
With drought and climate change, the current rate and type of development must adapt. Not enough water for everyone to continue same wasteful habits.
