My community is made up of individuals who I call family. Whether by blood, or extended, we are still a family that cares for and shows each other great love. While there are several local churches, Charlestown UMC is the one that was founded by some of my relatives, and presently has a congregation consisting of individuals who are part of that lineage. We are a rural community that is lacking direct access to shopping areas, public transportation, community meeting places and resources. The nearest hospital are located in Sylvania, 17 miles away, but has limitations that require many patients to be taken to Statesboro which is 26.6 miles away.
Historically, we are a farming community with a history of poor sharecroppers. However, presently there are many landowners . And retired individuals who have had to seek employment outside of our community in order to live a comfortable life. We love our community and we do not want it broken up by the redistricting process. We also want fair representation that does not allow big business to come in and take over what our ancestors worked so hard to achieve.
We have great concern that the only jobs that can provide a livable income are those that carry great harm to our environment. Along our Ogeechee River we have the Milliken Plant, a textile fibers fabricator. It was responsible for a giant fish kill in 2011. Last year the plant’s new owners submitted a plan to discharge more waste into the river that already has many fish that tested with contamination. We want to be able to swim in our river without worry, and fish there as well. Our water supply is being threatened by the operation of (4) lumber mills within a 6 mile radius, and by the big companies that operate very large crop watering machines. We wonder when our wells will run dry.
We want available clean water, easily accessible jobs that do not threaten our lives, we want a resource/recreation center for our community (the City of Sylvania has 2), we want a local food market (we now have a DG and 2 convenience stores) we want fair representation that reflects the shared needs of our community. We do not live inside of Sylvania and Sylvania resources do not come our way. Finally, we are a rural community and we need to be able to vote for leaders who are concerned about our well being. We do not want to be divided!
