With the exception of a few newer families, my community is made of people who have lived here all their lives. Most can trace the land that they live on back to their parents or grandparents. We are a closely knit community where almost everybody knows each other. Also we are further united within our local historic churches that we affectionately call "sister churches." We have hope for our community and do not want it broken up in the Redistricting process.
Churches in my community are historical with quite a few that are over 100 years old. Added to that, descendants of the founders still call these churches their church home. Along with attending church, we spend a lot of time visiting and supporting each other.
Many of our community members are retirees. However, those who are still in the workforce are employed in various industry that includes education, manufacturing, truck driving, and medical just to name a few. In regards to the environment, we are always concerned about the poisonous chemicals that the farmers apply to cotton and other crops. We are concerned that our water is being contaminated and feel that the county is doing very little to protect us.
My rural community needs better accountability regarding the chemicals that farmers apply to their crops. Most people here are afraid to drink their own well water for fear that it might be contaminated. Annual no cost testing of local wells is very much needed. Other needs include more accessible healthcare, a grocery store with fresh produce, and a community center to service both youth and adults. We also need better rural roads, because many people still live on those that are unmaintained dirt.
