My community is centered around St. Paul's Baptist Church as well as Mt. Gilead Baptist Church, which serves as an important communal resource, as they bought provide opportunities for those in the community. It is the location of a regular political events and many other events that occur there, such as protests, concerts, and gatherings, as well as have public services like playgrounds and community gardens. There is public transportation that extends to many communal areas in the city, as well as van pool options.
My community is in the center of Richmond, but somewhat in between traditional and suburban neighborhoods, being south of Henrico, and East of Chester. We have our own unique cultural identity centered around Short Pump Towne Center and Commonwealth Center Mall. Chesterfield is centered between both areas and offers the opportunity many social and cultural happenings there throughout the area.
My community is impacted by rising costs of living. Chesterfield tends to be the area that many people want to move to, which drives up the housing cost. As well as, it is a central stopping point. Chesterfield is also an area that people tend to focus on building and adding attractions, which also drives up the cost of homes. There are ample places to work, and the individuals of lower income tend to dwell in the outskirts of town.
Gentrification tends to be an area that some individuals tend to get upset about. My community is split up in redistricting, divided between congressional districts, state house and senate districts, as well as the state assembly districts, which dilutes our interests due to certain parties. Public transportation is not fluid in the area and would be helpful to have throughout the city. Education is a high priority in the area, with Chesterfield having some of the top ranked schools in the nation.
