Our family lives in north central Provo near the campus of BYU. We enjoy the access to the Provo city library, transit, recreation, university fine arts and sports, the downtown dining, arts, and festival scene, and drive far less than we did when we lived in a similar college town area in New Jersey. My wife has served on the board of a shelter for women and children and I have been involved in presenting to the Provo City Council, Provo Police, and others on issues of diversity and inclusion.
Historic downtown Provo, BYU campus, potential for new historical markers to women and Native peoples, as well as newer immigrants. Provo city is 19% Latino/Hispanic, the same as the United States, and many neighborhoods are over 40% Latina/o, but often seem erased in the general discussion of our community.
This is a college town anchored by BYU as well as nearby UVU in Orem, the largest university in the state as far as I know. There are also a number of large companies like Qualtrics, Ancestry.com, and NuSkin, among many others.
As a college town, there is sometimes an unspoken assumption that the voices of students should not matter, or at least matter less, but many live here far more than 4-6 years, often putting down roots to work in the tech sector or stay for further graduate study, etc. I think it is vital that Provo and Orem remain in the same district as a cohesive community of interest in terms of this college town metro area.
