1 – In my community, folks gather, socialize, and access services in various places such as public and private gyms or clubs like equinox or the New York City Recreation Center, taking the kids to public parks, going to a corner pub or bar to get drunk, visiting historical sites like Metropolitan Museum, attending fancy art galleries while drinking wine at Acquavella, Kraushaar, and Salon 94, attending places of worship by going to synagogues and church, visiting the public library, dining out at fancy restaurants, going on a stroll on York Ave and Sutton Place, attending scheduled, non-scheduled doctors’ appointments at public or private medical facilities and clinics.
2 – My community is made up of primarily White and Asian individuals. According to New York City’s Community Health Profile - 78% of people are white, 10% Asian, 7% Latino, 3% Black, and 2% belong to others. Only 6% have limited English Proficiency, whereas the entire city has 23%.
3 - According to New York City’s community health profile, 83% of folks are college graduates, whereas compared to NYC is 64%. Upper East Side has the lowest poverty and unemployment rate compared to the entire city. In addition, the Upper East Side has a lower rate of assault-related hospitalizations than the rest of the city. 62% of Upper East Side residents believe their neighbors are willing to help one another. This is lower than the citywide average of 72%.
The community needs that must be addressed: are 1. affordable housing, 2. improved transportation services, 3. zoning and building preservation, and 4. construction of a mosque for Muslim residents.
