Community Information

transportation diversity crime environment suburban

My community of Queens Village is comprised of a very diverse population of people compared to other small towns in Jamaica, Queens. With the LIRR in the center of town by Jamaica avenue providing fast commute west to Manhattan or east towards Roosevelt Field Mall, Bus routes which take you west towards the subway or north to Alley Pond park, and is home to various West Indian cuisine restaurants. In recent years, the city has made successful efforts in expanding accessible healthcare, and they are available for residents as well as other city residents.

When Queens Village was initially established in 1851, it was comprised of mostly rural lands and small communities from when the dutch had initially inhabited the area. In the late 19th century rolling into the 20th century, the construction of small homes came into effect with its first inhabitants of European decent. Following the Second World War, construction continued and the homes were inhabited primarily by post war veterans. It wasn't until the 1980s when the population began to diversify with different ethnic groups from South America and the West Indian countries.

Most of the residents in this community are either retired citizens, or they are employed west towards the city. During rush hour, Queens Village attracts several drivers from the eastern suburbs of Long Island. The reason for this is its free parking in the side roads. Where my community differs from the rest of the city, in the residential blocks there are no alternate side parking restrictions. So this benefits commuters that live east of Long Island so that they could drive and park their cars along the spacious roads, and contribute to the city economy by riding the LIRR from the station to Manhattan. Also, they park here and visit Alley Pond Park one of the largest parks in Queens.

Many residents of my community have faced various assault and burglary incidents, and the alleged perpetrators were the either the patients at Creedmoor Psychiatric Complex on the north side of town migrants that are also being housed at there. This has been a growing problem since this community was generally always very peaceful, and this was generally never a threat like it has been. I would like for the city to invest in more treatment for the mentally ill that may have been forced out of the complex as a result of the flooding of migrants at this complex, and I would also like for them to develop better strategies for the crisis of the migrant population increasing by the day.
