Community Information

gentrification housing education affordable unaffordable

My community is comprised of a Latinx community that attends Our Lady of Lourdes Church. This Church offers education for young students, hosts religious events, and offers resources such as food, clothes, etc. This West Harlem community is also home to the City College of New York. This CUNY school allows thousands of students to gain knowledge and interact with the community to obtain a bachelor's Degree, master's Degree, and other certifications.

West Harlem needs to preserve its historical building patterns and neighborhood scale.

Since the expansion of Columbia began, there have been many changes in the demographic of residents and businesses in West Harlem. Rents and Sale prices are rising, and many locally owned shops have been unable to afford to operate in the neighborhood. The West Harlem community needs to create job-intensive businesses that benefit residents.

Currently, the neighborhood is in the early stages of gentrification. There are rising rent prices, and large corporations are opening businesses in the neighborhood; causing mom-and-pop shops to close down and making it unaffordable for neighbors who have lived in the community the majority of their lives. The West Harlem community also needs to address the safety of the neighborhood and provide better education for its youth.
