Most people in my community are practicing Jews, so many of us gather at one of the two main Bukharian Jews synagogues, Beth Gavriel synagogue on 108th street in Rego Park and the Bukharian Jewish Community Center on 71st avenue in Forest Hills. During days off and after school hours many of the community members gather at the Annadale Playground and Yellowstone park, which are staple parks of the community. Finally, the community is also held together by the presence of a public elementary, middle, and high school, which makes it very easy to go to school within the community regardless of age.
A large proportion of the community is comprised of Bukharian Jews, who are Jews that come from the former USSR countries of Central Asia. They share common culture, religion, and languages (Russian,Bukharian), and all immigrated to the Forest Hills/Rego Park area during the 1990s after the fall of the Soviet Union.
The community contains a variety of professions, ranging from barbers to real estate to doctors to restaurant owners. Although many of the community members do not work within the community, the ones that do have a very diverse range of jobs. The community relies on outdoor areas such as parks and playgrounds as it is a suburban area and has a high population of children, thus it is important for the community to not be over-urbanized.
We hope that the members of this community can be kept in the same district, as it contains the highest density of Bukharian Jews in the world, all of whom share the same or similar cultural, social, and economic interests.
