City Hall geographically near, BPL Chinatown, Tufts Medical. Variety of community-based businesses and organizations contribute to social fabric. People all through Chinatown and the South End come to Chinatown for service, groceries, and participation in anything.
Chinese Diaspora, urban geography (part of neighborhood character), working class/lower income relative to adjacent areas. This was once a continuous community with a lot of Chinese residents as well as Latinx and Black residents. There still are a lot of concentrations of Chinese residents and some Latinx residents.
Mostly lower-income residents who are in service industries and other kinds of low wage work. Working-class elderly. A lot of air quality concerns, heat islands, flooding. Most egregious urban heat island in Boston, most polluted area of city (heavily impacted by turnpike), little greenspace.
Chinatown-Bay Village heavily impacted by gentrification, environmental pressure, and need for more equitable public and social health infrastructure. A lot of common economic justice (worker rights, affordable housing, opportunities for home ownership, workforce investment, etc) and immigrant rights issues (including language access).
