North Hudson Islamic Educational Center is a mosque that many members of our community attend. The diverse Arab/MENA populations may trace their ancestry to different countries, speak different dialects or languages, practice different religions and fall into a broad range of socioeconomic categories. However, we have much more in common and wanted to be represented by leaders that understand our community ethnic diversity and unique needs.
Hudson County along with Passaic County house the older Arab American presence. Many Arabs that came to NJ started off in this area and moved to other places of NJ. My community is definitely affected by the gentrification of this area that has led some to move away from this area and has also led to some investing in real estate and getting rich over the years as the area became more gentrified Many families are multigenerational families that have expanded over the years.
Many businesses along Bergenline are Arab American-run. Riverside Pediatrics, one of the larger pediatrics practices in North New Jersey, is run by an Arab American.
Language access needs are a big concern for my community. At least 3.5 million Americans of Arab descent live in this country, yet we are not represented in Census data as unique racial and ethnic categories as we are still categorized under the white race. Being lumped into the White race category has real and detrimental effects on our community: health, socioeconomic relief, admission into schools, psychological effects, and impact on immigration issues.
